Planning a theme park trip with your kids is incredibly exciting, but it can also feel a bit daunting. Any parent knows that a day filled with thrills and spills requires some thoughtful preparation. But don’t worry, we’re here to help!

In this article, we’ll explore the many incredible benefits of theme parks for kids and share our ultimate list of what to pack for a theme park trip, with expert tips for a fun, stress-free family adventure.

The benefits of theme parks for kids

There’s nothing quite like a day at a theme park. With thrilling rides, incredible attractions, spectacular shows, and a vibrant atmosphere, it’s the perfect destination for families to relax and have fun!

However, theme parks can also do wonders for a child’s development in terms of social skills, confidence, physical health and mental wellbeing. Let’s take a look at how theme parks can positively impact these key areas.

Educational opportunities

Many theme parks across the UK incorporate educational aspects into their attractions. For instance, Paultons Park hosts a ‘Science in the Park’ day annually in March aimed at KS2, teaching kids about physics, biology, and chemistry through activity trails, talks and more!

Meanwhile, zoos and aquariums provide opportunities to learn about wildlife and conservation. These learning experiences are not just entertaining for kids but also help spark their curiosity about the natural world.

Physical activity

One of the biggest benefits of theme parks is encouraging kids to move around as they explore expansive grounds. Walking, running, and climbing in play areas ensure children stay active.

Unlike playing video games or watching TV, theme parks require active participation, through fun activities like water slides or obstacle courses, promoting physical fitness while helping kids expend energy in a positive way.

Social interaction

Visiting theme parks is often a shared experience that helps build social skills in kids. They get to bond with family, make new friends, and collaborate on cooperative activities. For example, at parks like Alton Towers, kids can team up at Mutiny Bay to blast water at rival ships as they circle around.

As they work together to conquer challenges or enjoy a ride, kids learn to express themselves and listen to others. Over time, this helps boost their self-esteem and equips them with the social tools they need to build strong relationships both at the park and beyond.

What to bring to a theme park

Now that you understand why theme parks are so great and how they benefit our kids, here’s our list of what to take to a theme park. It covers all the essential items needed to stay organised and prepared for a fun-filled day ahead!

Drinks & snacks

As you are spending a lot of time outside, staying hydrated is key when visiting a theme park. Ensure you pack plenty of water bottles to keep everyone hydrated, especially during the hot summer months.

It’s also a good idea to bring a selection of healthy snacks like granola bars and fruit slices to help keep energy levels high and tummies full! Plus, it saves you time and money if you need a quick bite during your visit. To keep everything safe and edible, consider using bento boxes or small containers to organise different snacks and meals, keeping them separate and fresh.

A waterproof jacket

The weather can be unpredictable, (especially in the UK) and a sudden rain shower could dampen the day’s excitement. By packing a lightweight, waterproof jacket for each family member you’ll be ready for any unexpected changes.

However, these jackets aren’t just for rainy weather—they’re also perfect for water rides where you might get soaked. Whether it’s braving the splashes on a log flume or tackling the rapids, having a waterproof layer means you can enjoy the thrills without worrying about wet clothes or discomfort afterwards.

A change of clothes

As mentioned earlier, water rides like the Tidal Wave at Thorpe Park often leave you drenched. That’s why packing a spare change of clothes is a must, ensuring no one has to walk around feeling soggy or uncomfortable. This includes a dry t-shirt, socks, leggings/trousers and a light jacket. To maximise space, roll each item tightly in a waterproof bag to help prevent wrinkles and keep everything organised.

It’s also handy for younger kids who might have an accidental spill during lunchtime or get a little messy playing. A quick costume change can save the day, keeping everyone happy and ready to continue the rest of the day.

Sunscreen, sunglasses & hats

During the summer months, protection from the sun is crucial. Apply water-resistant sunscreen (at least SPF30 or higher) before heading out, and remember to reapply it every two hours, especially after water rides or excessive sweating. It’s also worth bringing sunglasses with UV protection to shield against harmful UV rays.

Pro tip: Wear hats like bucket hats or those with neck flaps for protecting sensitive areas like the face, ears, and neck. Lightweight, breathable clothing in light colours can also help keep everyone cool while providing extra protection.

First aid kit

Accidents happen, and having a small first aid kit is a smart way to be ready for any minor mishaps. Include essentials like plasters for cuts and blisters, antiseptic wipes to clean scrapes, and antihistamines or hayfever tablets in case of allergic reactions.

If your child has specific medical needs that require medical devices like inhalers or epi-pens, make sure they’re easily accessible and stored in a secure spot. While theme parks often have first aid stations, having your own kit on hand means you can quickly address minor issues.

5 Bonus tips for a successful theme park trip

1. Plan your day

Review the park map and prioritise popular rides early in the day to save both time and energy. Check showtimes and parade schedules too, like Seatopia at Chessington World of Adventures, and slot them into your plan. Don’t forget to include meal breaks and downtime, especially if travelling with kids.

2. Use a backpack

A comfortable and sturdy backpack is essential for carrying everything you need. Choose one with padded straps and multiple compartments for items like water bottles, snacks, suncream, and spare clothes. Keeping your essentials organised in a backpack allows you to easily grab things without the hassle of rummaging around

3. Bring a pram or stroller

For families with younger children, a stroller, pram or pushchair can be a lifesaver. It not only helps tired little legs but also provides a convenient place to store extra items like jackets or snacks. If you can’t bring your own, many theme parks, like Alton Towers, offer stroller rentals near the main entrance for a fee* of £10 (single buggy) or £15 (double buggy) per day, plus a £10 refundable deposit.

4. Prepare for queues

Waiting in line can test anyone’s patience, especially kids. Bring small toys like action figures, fidget spinners, or a deck of cards to keep them entertained. Audiobooks or interactive apps can also be a great distraction. To minimise queues, consider fast passes like Chessington World of Adventures’ “Reserve & Ride” which lets you join virtual queues and enjoy other attractions while waiting for your turn.

5. Wear comfortable footwear

Theme park trips often involve a lot of walking. Therefore, comfortable footwear is a must to prevent blisters and sore feet. Opt for sturdy, broken-in shoes like trainers or supportive sandals, and avoid brand-new shoes that haven’t been worn in yet as they might pinch or rub, causing discomfort.
