For example, chemistry experiments like mixing iodine with starch to produce a blue-black colour demonstrate chemical reactions and molecule formation. This can be used to test for starch in foods or detect contamination. 

Physics

Physics focuses on the fundamental forces of nature, such as gravity, motion, and energy. Depending on the focus, science experiments are often carried out in controlled environments like laboratories, classrooms, natural settings such as forests or oceans, or even outer space, to ensure accurate and reliable results.

 

The different types of science experiments 

In the world of science, experiments are broadly categorised into three main types: experimental (randomised control), quasi-experimental, and observational (non-experimental). 

All three play a unique role in how scientists gather evidence and uncover new insights about the world. During Science lessons at school, kids may undertake the following types of experiments.

1. Experimental experiments

Experimental (or randomised control) experiments involve testing a hypothesis by changing one factor (the independent variable) and measuring its effect on another (the dependent variable). For example, a scientist might change the temperature of water to see how it affects the rate at which sugar dissolves. 2. Quasi-experimental experiments

3. Observational experiments

How do experiments fit in with the scientific method? 

Experiments are an important part of the scientific method, which is a step-by-step process that helps scientists (and curious kids) explore questions and test whether their predictions are accurate or not. 

Here’s how it works:

  • Ask a Question – Every experiment starts with a question, like “What makes plants grow faster?” or “What happens when you mix oil and water?”
  • Do some research – Before testing, it’s helpful to learn a little about the topic. For example, we know plants need water and sunlight to grow.
  • Make a hypothesis – A hypothesis is an educated guess about what will happen. For example, If a plant gets more sunlight, it will grow taller.
  • Conduct the experiment – This is the fun part! Test your hypothesis by following a step-by-step experiment. Keep everything the same except for one variable, like giving one plant more sunlight than another.
  • Observe and record results – Watch closely and take notes on what happens. Does the plant with more sunlight grow taller?
  • Draw a conclusion – Based on your results, decide whether your hypothesis was correct or not. Either way, you’ve learned something new!

Bubbling Volcano

A classic science experiment that’s sure to “blow” your kids’ minds! When baking soda reacts with vinegar, it creates carbon dioxide gas, which causes the bubbling effect, simulating a volcanic eruption. This fun experiment is a fantastic way to introduce children to the concept of acids and bases and how they interact to form a new substance.

  • Materials: Baking soda, vinegar, food colouring, clay or a plastic bottle.
  • Instructions: Shape the clay around the bottle to create a volcano. Fill the bottle with baking soda and add a few drops of food colouring. Pour in the vinegar and watch the volcano erupt!

Rainbow Milk

This science experiment for kids shows how surface tension works, and is a great visual example of the properties of liquids and how molecules behave when disrupted. When soap is added to milk with food colouring, it breaks the surface tension of the milk, causing the colours to swirl. 

  • Materials: Milk, food colouring, dish soap, cotton buds.
  • Instructions: Pour milk into a shallow dish. Add a few drops of different food colourings. Dip a cotton bud in dish soap and touch it to the milk. Watch the colours swirl and dance!

DIY Slime

Slime is a fun way to demonstrate polymers and non-Newtonian fluids. The process of mixing glue and contact lens solution creates a stretchy, squishy substance that behaves differently from regular liquids. It also teaches kids about the scientific principles behind viscosity, solids, and liquids. 

  • Materials: PVA Glue, contact lens solution, water.
  • Instructions: Mix glue and water in a bowl. Add a small amount of contact lens solution and stir until the slime forms. Knead the slime until it’s smooth and stretchy.

Balloon Rocket

Investigate Newton’s third law of motion, which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. When the air is released from the balloon, it propels the balloon forward. This experiment helps children grasp the basic principles of force, motion, and propulsion. 

  • Materials: Balloon, string, straw, tape.
  • Instructions: Thread the string through the straw. Tape the straw to the balloon. Inflate the balloon and hold the end closed. Release the balloon and watch it zoom along the string!
