Adventure for all: PGL hosts wheelchair accessible adventure
At PGL, we believe adventure should be accessible to every young person.
That’s why this summer, we were thrilled to collaborate with UK charity Whizz Kidz to host a Family Activity Day at PGL Caythorpe Court – bringing together young wheelchair users and their families for a day of fun-filled adventure.
Making adventure more accessible
Adventure activities can sometimes feel out of reach for young people with additional needs and disabilities, so together with Whizz Kidz, we wanted to show what’s possible when accessibility is considered from the very beginning.
Hosted at our Caythorpe Court centre in Lincolnshire, the day was designed to give families the chance to get active, try something new and enjoy adventure in an environment where everyone could take part.
As Charlotte Yates, Senior Partnerships Manager at PGL, explained:
“For us, this is all about welcoming people of all different abilities and giving them the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities together. There are no barriers here. It’s about everyone getting involved.”
Adventure made possible
Young people and their families took part in a range of activities including trapeze, laser tag and rifle shooting, while the Whizz Kidz team delivered wheelchair skills sessions and expert guidance.
Every activity was carefully planned to support participation, personal development and, most importantly, fun – allowing all members of the family regardless of ability the opportunity to take part, together.
“Accessibility is important to us, so we used our inclusivity equipment to facilitate our Rope Climb session. The other sessions we delivered were fully wheelchair accessible, with everyone doing the same thing… The team adapted timings that worked for the families, meaning they could take their time getting ready and still have a fun and action-packed day. What did the families think?
The activity day gave young people the opportunity to try activities they may not usually have access to, while parents and guardians were able to connect and network with other families.
“My daughter absolutely loved the opportunity to be around other wheelchair users. It’s been a massive benefit.”
“They’ve loved having lots of different things to try and experiencing things they might not usually get the opportunity to do. All of the activities have been made really inclusive, which has been amazing!”
“I really enjoyed doing the trapeze. I got to do it three times and it was really fun!”
Raising the bar for inclusive adventures
We’re incredibly proud to have welcomed Whizz Kidz families to Caythorpe Court and look forward to continuing to create opportunities for more young people to experience adventure without barriers.
