Campfire activities to try at PGL

From creative challenges to campfire traditions, these activities are about so much more than just sitting around a fire. They’re a chance to try something new, laugh the night away, and connect with friends in a way that’s completely different to the daytime adventures.

1. Songs and sing-along

What better way to kick off your campfire night than with a lively sing-along? Bring everyone together by choosing popular songs that everyone can join in on or learn classic PGL camp songs from our group leaders. With everyone encouraged to share their favourite song (and maybe a few dance moves too!), singing around the fire creates a sense of belonging.

2. Storytelling

Storytelling is a timeless campfire activity that sparks imagination and creativity. Groups can take turns sharing tales—whether they’re spooky, adventurous, or just silly. You could even create a collaborative story, where each person adds a sentence to build on what the last person said. This fun campfire activity leaves everyone laughing and engaged, strengthening the bonds of friendship among campers.

3. Toast marshmallows

No campfire experience is complete without toasting marshmallows! Grab your sticks and get ready for the ultimate campfire treat. Once toasted, you can enjoy them plain, sandwich them between biscuits and chocolate for s’mores, or even add them to your hot chocolate for a delicious twist! This sweet campfire activity is a crowd-pleaser and the perfect ending to your night. For more mouth-watering ideas, be sure to check out our guide to tasty campfire treats.

4. Campfire art and nature crafts

Get creative with nature with this activity! Before the sunlight disappears completely, collect leaves, twigs, pine cones, anything you can find from around you really, and then use it to create patterns, mini sculptures, or any kind of art. It’s a calming activity and encourages appreciation for nature around you. A brilliant choice for winding down after an action-packed day.

5. Stargazing

Once the fire is crackling and the sky has turned dark, it’s time to look up to the stars! At many of our countryside settings at PGL, the night sky is excellent for stargazing. Can you spot planets, or even constellations like Orion, the Plough, or Cassiopeia? Perhaps somebody will see a shooting star!

Campfire games at PGL

No campfire night is complete without a few games, right? They’re a staple, and for good reason. They get everyone involved and can help create new friendships, by encouraging communication and helping some people come out of their shell. Let’s have a look at some of the greatest campfire games to play.

1. Charades

Games are a fantastic way to bring energy to your campfire gatherings. Charades is a classic that never fails to amuse. Split into teams and act out phrases, movies, or famous personalities without speaking. Alternatively, 20 Questions is great for testing your friends’ deduction skills. Choose a person, place, or thing, and let the questioning begin! These fun campfire activities are ideal for all ages and will keep everyone entertained.

2. Go on a scavenger hunt

Add a little adventure to your campfire night by organising a scavenger hunt! Before the sun sets, prepare a list of items for your group to find around the campsite. Items can include natural elements like pine cones or specific leaves. This interactive campfire activity not only encourages teamwork but also heightens the excitement of the outdoors. Plus, once everyone returns, you can gather around the fire to share your finds!

3. Two truths and a lie

This campfire game is the perfect icebreaker and one of the easiest to play. Each person shares three things about themselves, but one of these will be completely false. Then it’s down to the rest of the group to decide which one is the lie. It’s entertaining and gets everybody talking and introduced. Sometimes kids can find it hard to just go around the circle and talk about themselves, but as soon as it turns into a game, it’s a different story.

4. The alphabet game

Here’s another simple but fast-paced game! The group leader will pick a category, which could be anything from animals, countries, food, or even PGL activities. Then, going around the campfire circle, each person must name something in that category, starting with the next letter of the alphabet. Miss one and you’re out! You could also add a time limit on how long somebody has to provide an answer to make it fair to everybody in the group. Yes, it sounds easy — until you’re trying to think of a vegetable beginning with X!
